What are GLP-1s?

You may have heard GLP-1 agonists referred to by other names, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists, incretin mimetics, or GLP-1 receptor agonists. While the names sound complex, the applications are much more accessible: These medications are usually administered as injections to help manage blood sugar levels or treat obesity.

This hormone regulates blood sugar, appetite, and digestion for improved weight loss.

How do GLP-1s work?

GLP-1s boost a hormone that slows food leaving the stomach, keeps the liver from releasing too much sugar into the bloodstream, and helps the body release insulin. As a result, your blood sugar is lower, and your appetite is much easier to manage.

What are the benefits of GLP-1s?

While they are most known for their role in remarkable weight loss, Dr. Kapoor may recommend GLP-1s for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Improving lipid disorders or fatty liver disease
  • Reducing the risk of kidney or heart disease
  • Lowering your blood pressure
  • Delaying how quickly diabetes-related nephropathy progresses

ARA Integrative and Functional Medicine personalize each treatment plan to meet your needs, and Dr. Kapoor can adjust your dosage or find an alternative medication if needed.

What can I expect from GLP-1 injections?

After a thorough examination and discussion of your medical history and goals, Dr. Kapoor can prescribe GLP-1 medications. You may have these injections administered at the office, or you can learn how to perform the subcutaneous injection yourself.

No matter who performs the injection, the area and syringe should be prepped and sanitized before proceeding. Once done, it’s a quick injection into fatty tissue (not muscle) that should be no more painful than a short pinch.

As with any medication, you may experience some side effects when taking GLP-1s. The most common are nausea or general loss of appetite, diarrhea, or vomiting. You’ll most likely notice side effects when you first try the medication or increase your dosage.

In addition to GLP-1s, ARA Integrative and Functional Medicine offers injections to promote faster weight loss or better vitality, including:

  • GLP-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) to regulate fat storage and suppress inflammation.
  • Methionine, inositol, and choline (MIC) injection (sometimes called a “skinny shot”)
  • Lipotropic injections to dissolve fat and provide vital nutrients
  • B12 Methylcobalamin to boost energy
